AALAWuN channel pavilion updates Flower Show

Flower Show latest

Dear Flower Arrangers,

Thank you all for signing up to the AA Flower Show. For those who would like further information on the event, please scroll down to the the text at the end of this email or visit the following links.

In preparation for the delightfully exciting week of events from the 15th to the 22nd of November, we are requesting you fill out a super quick registration for m. In additional to basic details, we would like for you to submit a quick sketch of your proposal. It can be as elaborate or simple as you want, and whether you follow through with it is up to you, however its useful for us to have an idea of what may be created on the day! If you would like to have further engagement in the event, (for instance, leading an arrangement workshop, photographing it, or DJing at the party), please let us know.
You can find the form attached to this email or printed at reception. We ask you to please drop it off at reception, and for the digital sketchers, send it to us by email.
If you have any questions, suggestions, or concerns, please feel free to email us or approach us at school.

For those of you who don’t know what we look like, this is us at the top of the page

INTRODUCTION
A flower doesn't love you or hate you, it just exists.

And like a flower, the AA flower show hopes to just exist.

It consists of:
a day of workshops (15th November)
as many arrangements we as a school can muster
a week long exhibition
a launch party
a tabloid
a post-florum and funeral

This unassessed week of floral exuberance is brought to you in collaboration with AALAWuN. While not completely briefless, any and all ideas are welcome to the spectacle we hope this will be.

Through the workshops we hope to help realise and grow(pun!) your idea.

ARRANGEMENTS
While not completely briefless, any and all ideas are welcome to the spectacle we hope this will be.

"Create a Language Using Flowers"

DETAILS

15th November will be a day of flower arrangement workshops conducted at the AA from 10am to 5pm.

These workshops will be conducted by artists, potters, architects and maybe even a florist.

The focus of the workshops will be on helping you actualise your ideal flower arrangement.

Some flowers and materials will be available for use. We will however need you to bring your own vessel and any found objects you may want to incorporate.

AALAWuN channel pavilion update WALKlondon

WALKlondon

my proposal for the walks.

They could be a great opportunity for the AA to engage more with the city where it lives and breathes.

I really do believe that the AA lacks on its connection with London, and maybe some people see it as one of its strengths, but I do believe that understanding the local context, engaging and working with it is one our responsibilities as thinkers/makers/designers/architects/urbanists / p e o p l e!
I really think it would be nice to kick off with a walk lead by a tutor, staff or colleague.

I have assembled a list of tutors that I know from the different parts of the school and can write emails to invite them. What do you think? And we could discuss more this friday?
We need to think when these walks could work - it could be Saturday morning? Or weekdays afternoon? Or weekdays morning before 10?

As weeks go by, we become busier and busier in school. I was thinking to kick off with the first walk in two weeks time, so we have time to make it visible to the school.

It would great to have a really strong image for these walks - physically and virtually!
It would be nice to document the walk and the building or whatever is being shown by the tutor/colleague and then publish a small zine after?
We could aim and have 4 walks for this term 1 and all could culminate with an open debate in january about its impact of these walks/ within the student body? There are 2 months until the end of term 1 which gives us 8 weeks to do these walks. I think if we already start next week planning it and pressing the green button, 4 walks is a decent number.

Questions:
-which days?
-it has to be a free event - we will need small amount of money for printing posters - membership office usually do walks around the city but it is always ticketed
-a one hour walk - the meeting point could be the AA or another tube sta
-what are the conversations we would want to have in school? what themes to explore?
what themes would be interesting to explore? the city, buildings, high streets, health system, housing, education, museums/galleries, follies, archaeology, public/private spaces, media and technologies

I guess tutors/colleagues will be happy to do this for free?

I did speak with Shin about the walks and he said it would probably be more interesting from his perspective if we do a joint walk with let's say studios that share their sites in a certain geography of London. For example inter5 with dip11. I guess it will be nice to see tomorrow the list with all the units and where they base their sites in London too. Shin also mentioned it might be interesting to invite externals that do walks, he mentioned a stone tour exploring all the different stones of London etc.

I think I would much more enjoy if these walks would be walked by people that work and study at the AA. So here is the list I have assembled. I have also included admin and the director as David suggested. There is an extended list as I was thinking maybe it's a good way to check quickly who would like to walk these walks and also it's an easy way to make this initiative visible too.
Let me know what you think.

Open week is from the 30th of October to the 3rd of November and it would be great if one of the walks takes place then - I know quite a few units are away then but maybe I can trace which ones will be in London? So we know roughly that we can count on students.
I will bring tomorrow some examples for the visual identity of the walks.

AALAWuN Channel Pavilion - meet

AALAWuN channel pavilion
 (first 2017/2018) meeting Friday 6th October 2017

subjects/proposals discussed:

Flower Show ( arranged, displayed ) - Sean and Pati

Bring flowers into the AA work / small individual & bigger collective arrangements ( perhaps sculptures?) formal and political structures placed around the school as points of discussion/conversation triggers.
I like the idea because it sound totally unpromising – David Greene
To be discussed further at next meeting. (TBDFANM)

Short walks – Andreea (tutors do a ‘field trip’ in the city- Ryan)
As so much unit work is aimed at sights outside central London, hold informal walks lead by tutors or students perhaps pointing out favourite/most ugly building etc – engaged in the context of London.
TBDFANM.

Staff Crits – Theo, Jumanah

crits/jury with tutors. Open to all students to perhaps prize open a different kind of debate between students and staff. Also interesting to hear a tutor give a brief biography.
NB: Important that students set the rules for inviting the tutors proposals for this to be discussed at next meeting.
- a list of 5 names of possible tutors to invite were made by the students attending, most requested names will be presented at next meeting.

Pavilion – Fai, Esther and Lior Ramon - inter 10
proposal that their pavilion accommodates LAWuN activities in some way – crits/flower show/presentations etc?
TBDFANM.

Other subjects raised:

Bar - A case should be made for the Bar Walls to be the domain of the students for a rolling, constantly changing cycle of information, opinion and work. LAWuN will check availability beginning in December after current exhibition.

Pub Quiz – Architectural Pub Quiz planned for just before Christmas.... Teams/Questions/ Decoration

Publication Worksop – One day intensive workshop on drawing up, compiling and editing a Channel Pavilion newspaper.- some questions and student concerns to be addressed: Is and if so, how is Community understood beyond the now? What I want/what I do – want and legacy. Experimentation, is it still relevant at the AA , The Unit System. What are the wider implications of being unassessed?

Hooke Park Visit : LAWuN is planning a day visit to the site in the next month – Martin Self and Staff will give us a tour of the whole site – not just the workshop area. Put down your power tools it's time for flora fauna and forest

Scrap Books : important request that all interested feel free to add to the scrap book located in channel pavilion room – next to Dip13 graduate corridor . This will be a big part of the Channel Pavilion project so the more cross sections of opinion, question and design from across the school and beyond, the better.

NB – Please note due to Lunchtime series of lectures our meeting has been put back to 1:30pm -Fri 13th Oct.
Please meet then in Channel Pavilion HQ – Next to Dip 13 Graduate corridor.
